Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our coagulation testing services.

Coagulation tests are essential blood tests that evaluate how well your blood clots. They help diagnose bleeding disorders, monitor patients on anticoagulant therapy (like warfarin), assess the risk of thrombosis (blood clots), and evaluate liver function since many clotting factors are produced in the liver.

Most coagulation tests do not require fasting. However, if your test includes other parameters like lipid profile or glucose, you may need to fast. It's best to follow your doctor's instructions. Drinking plenty of water is encouraged as it makes blood draw easier.

Routine coagulation tests like PT/INR and APTT are usually completed within 24 hours. More specialized tests like Factor assays may take 2-3 days. Emergency tests can be processed within 2-4 hours if required.

Elevated PT/INR indicates that blood is taking longer than normal to clot. This may be due to vitamin K deficiency, liver disease, warfarin medication, or certain bleeding disorders. Your doctor will interpret the results based on your medical history.

PT (Prothrombin Time) evaluates the extrinsic pathway of clotting (Factors I, II, V, VII, X), while APTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time) evaluates the intrinsic pathway (Factors I, II, V, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII). Both tests together provide a complete picture of clotting function.

Elevated D-Dimer levels indicate that significant clot breakdown is occurring in the body. This can be caused by conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), recent surgery, trauma, or infections. Your doctor may order additional tests to determine the cause.

Yes, coagulation tests are generally safe. The risks are minimal and similar to any routine blood test, including slight bruising, bleeding, or rare infection at the puncture site. Our trained phlebotomists ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

Some medications can affect coagulation test results, especially blood thinners like warfarin, heparin, aspirin, and other NSAIDs. It's important to inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and vitamins you're taking before the test.
