Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about body fluid analysis

Body fluid analysis is a diagnostic procedure that examines various bodily fluids to detect infections, inflammations, cancers, or other medical conditions. It helps physicians identify the cause of symptoms, monitor disease progression, and determine appropriate treatment plans.

Body fluid collection depends on the type of fluid needed. Pleural fluid is collected via thoracentesis (needle drainage from chest), peritoneal fluid through paracentesis (abdominal drainage), CSF via lumbar puncture (spinal tap), and synovial fluid through joint aspiration. Our trained specialists ensure safe and comfortable collection.

The procedure may cause some discomfort, similar to a blood draw. Local anesthesia is used to minimize pain during the collection process. Our experienced technicians ensure the procedure is as comfortable as possible.

Routine body fluid analysis results are typically available within 24-48 hours. Specialized tests like cultures, PCR, or tumor markers may take 3-5 days. Emergency tests can be prioritized for faster results.

Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme that increases in conditions involving lymphocyte activation. Elevated ADA in pleural, peritoneal, or CSF fluid often indicates tuberculosis infection, though it can also be elevated in lymphomas, cancers, and other inflammatory conditions.

Body fluid collection is generally safe when performed by trained professionals. Minor risks may include bruising, bleeding, or infection at the collection site. More serious complications like pneumothorax (lung collapse) during pleural fluid collection are rare.

Yes, body fluid analysis can help detect cancer through cytological examination. The presence of abnormal cells in pleural, peritoneal, or CSF fluid may indicate metastatic cancer. However, definitive cancer diagnosis often requires biopsy and histopathological examination.

Preparation varies depending on the test. For some fluid analyses, you may need to fast. Inform your doctor about any medications you're taking, especially blood thinners. Our staff will provide specific instructions when you schedule your appointment.
